Hitting the Museums

February 17, 2010

Even this winter with fair temperatures and little snow residents of MidCoast might have cabin fever. Hitting the museums is a great way to deal with those feelings. This time of year a couple stand outs include the Maine Maritime Museum in Southern MidCoast and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland.

The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland recently opened exhibits on Louise Nevelson, printmaking and a photographic celebration of working waterfronts from Port Clyde to Belfast as seen through the eyes of teenage photographers.

A View of the Shipyard

The Maine Maritime Museum on the banks of the Kennebec River just outside Bath is open year round.  From watercraft and lobstering, to shipbuilding and sea trade, visitors will hear stories about dangerous voyages to distant lands, see how a shipbuilder’s family lived in the 1890s, smell the sawdust from historic ship timbers, and discover the wonders and mysteries of Maine’s maritime culture.

We’re lucky to have two great maritime museums in our area: besides the Maine Maritime Museum featured in this post, there’s also the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, which our English students from abroad enjoy immensely. Nice pictures!

    Hello Brian.
The Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport is an amazing resource. I would like to write about their 2010 exhibition, but neither the education director or curator responded to queries. I heard it is an exhibit about windjammers, which sounds like a fantastic topic! Thank you for commenting.
