Fort Baldwin State Historic Site

Fort Baldwin State Historic Site

Unlike many fortifications in Maine, Fort Baldwin is fairly new. It was built between 1905 and 1912 for coastal gun batteries. During World War I, the fort and nearby Fort Popham was home to two hundred members of the 13th and 29th Coast Artillery. All the original guns were removed in July 1924. Then, during a part of World War II, Fort Baldwin housed D Battery of the 8th Coast Artillery.
