Catch the Best of Maine at The Dip Net
One recent summer day, we were looking for a way to get off the beaten path and experience some of Maine’s less traveled sights, sounds, smells and tastes.
There are plenty of reasons to make the trip from Route 1 down to Port Clyde at the end of 131, like the boat to Monhegan, a visit to Marshall Point Lighthouse/Museum, rent a kayak to explore the harbor, a surprising number of art galleries, drinks at the Barn Cafe Bar, or a trip back in time at the famous Port Clyde General Store, but few places give you a taste of the real Maine coast like The Dip Net Restaurant.
Tucked in behind the General Store on a pier between the ferry and the town dock, visitors are greeted by staff and seated at picnic tables in the sun or sheltered by a cheery yellow awning. Surrounded by all the activity of a classic, working Maine harbor, we took in the expanse of Port Clyde Harbor while sipping our fresh lemonades and waiting for our lunches.
The atmosphere alone made the trip worthwhile for us, but it turned out that was just the bonus. The real reward was the food. Lots of places make claims about how fresh their seafood is, but with the dock right underneath us and supplies from the likes of the Port Clyde Coop and Port Clyde Fresh catch, this is the real deal. My companion feasted on a classic Maine lobster roll, served “naked” (buttter and mayo on the side) and I thoroughly enjoyed my fish tacos. The menu features both traditional and innovative dishes, and while seafood is the draw, there are plenty of burgers, chicken, salads, sandwiches and other options for those with other tastes.
After a fantastic meal and a short stroll around the harbor front, it was time for a bike ride to work up our appetites for the next culinary adventure.
