Holiday Getaway: Portland to Boothbay for Gardens Aglow
A day trip from Portland to MidCoast Maine makes the perfect holiday getaway between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Last week my friends Melissa, Rick and I took a trip up the beautiful coast of Maine to Boothbay Harbor to see the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden’s winter event, Gardens Aglow. On the way we stopped in Brunswick, Bath, Wiscasset and Boothbay Harbor to see what MidCoast Maine had to offer.
We started with a glass of wine at Enoteca Athena, a Greek and Italian inspired restaurant on Maine Street. This warm, cozy atmosphere was inviting and a great way to start the trip. Our next stop was to Frontier for an appetizer. The staff was so welcoming as we enjoyed fried brussels sprouts and Oxbow beer. We left feeling full and ready for our next stop, downtown Bath.
Bath is such a cool little city! We parked on Front Street and walked around, window shopping and enjoying the holiday decor.
After a short drive up Route 1, we arrived in Boothbay Harbor. The sun was setting as we wandered down to the harbor, streets decorated in lights and storefronts bursting with holiday spirit. At dark we boarded the bus to Gardens Aglow. Driving up to the gardens was so exciting, the glow peaked through the trees as we arrived. We checked in and began our tour, starting with s’mores around the campfire. This light display was unlike anything we had ever seen! Over 360,000 energy efficient bulbs light up the Botanical Gardens in the most magical way.
