Late Winter Weekend Getaway
From Portland to Jefferson, Wiscasset to Bath and Brunswick
Watch this trip from two perspectives:
On our most recent trip to Maine’s MidCoast, we were lucky to find ourselves exploring hundreds of acres of land known as Hidden Valley Nature Center on a weekend getaway. We left from Portland and got to Jefferson in under an hour. We started in the morning by meeting our guide, Andy, and getting outfitted with cross-country skis. We toured the Barn and got to explore each of the cabins that dot the property. From off-grid yurts to primitive cabins, we found ourselves remarking at how such utilitarian structures were also some of the most beautiful.
We explored via snowmobile to get the lay of the land before embarking on our skis.
We skied along the frozen pond until sunset and then settled into The Pond Cabin.
With the wood stove cranking, we refueled for a night of candle-lit card games and lounging.
We woke up with the sun to total coziness, and had slow morning of coffee and gazing out of the giant windows that span the front of the cabin. Eventually, we gave in and packed our things up to the ski back to the car.
Ready for a second coffee, we made our way to Spruce in Wiscassett, where we got a chance to meet the owners Matt and Julie, and we connected about our shared love for Maine-made products over two perfect cups of siphon coffee. Spruce shares their cute storefront with Little Maine Mercantile, and we met shop owner Sarah, too. Everything she sells is made by “neighbors from New England” and we felt like we were those kind of neighbors right away. Then we made our way to the Starlight Cafe in Bath for some tasty breakfast burritos. This little city is on the waterfront of the Kennebec River, and beautiful.
To round out our MidCoast weekend, we hit the road one last time to land ourselves at the Brunswick Waterfront Flea Market, one of our favorite weekend spots to hit before we headed back to Portland.
We always love our time spent in Maine’s MidCoast and Islands and this weekend was no exception! We really appreciate the opportunities we have in MidCoast to meet and get to know young entrepreneurs and adventurers, who are provided the opportunity to thrive in Maine, while preserving nature, community, and all that make Maine such a wonderful state.
