The General Henry Knox Museum honors the life and times of Revolutionary War hero Henry Knox and the heritage of his grand house, Montpelier.
The museum invites you to explore the people and purpose behind the American Revolution. It is open for you to touch, feel, smell and even taste life as it was more than 220 years ago and imagine what it was like to be involved in monumental, historic change.
Knox, a Boston bookseller-turned-general, helped lead the American Revolution. After service as a soldier and politician, Knox moved to Maine and built Montpelier. Long after his death, the house was razed to make way for the Knox and Lincoln Railroad. But in 1929, a recreation of Montpelier was built to celebrate Knox's life and house his museum.
