Rockland, Thomaston & St. George Peninsula

There are so many interesting things to do in Rockland, Maine. Every August, Rockland honors its roots as a fishing community with the Maine Lobster Festival, where more than 20,000 pounds of lobster are cooked and served each year. At the Farnsworth Art Museum, you'll find works by Gilbert Stuart, Thomas Sully, Thomas Eakins, Eastman Johnson, Fitz Hugh Lane and Maurice Prendergast. Farnsworth also has the nation's second-largest collection of works by 20th-century sculptor Louise Nevelson and its Wyeth Center features the works of Andrew, N.C., and Jamie Wyeth.

South of Rockland is the small town of Thomaston, which is home to Montpelier: The General Henry Knox Museum and the Maine State Prison Showroom, which sells handcrafted wood products made by Maine's inmates.

On the St. George peninsula, which stretches out into Penobscot Bay, you can visit the Owls Head Transportation Museum to see horse-drawn carriages that are more than 150 years old, biplanes, automobiles and motorcycles. You can also see Owls Head Light, built in 1825.
