Where the Mountains Meet the Sea: Winter Fat Biking
The Fat Tire Bike is the perfect vehicle for exploration in winter
We can’t help but notice the amount of winter fat biking happening in our region this year! Because fat tires bikes are incredibly light and the tires are much wider than traditional bicycles or mountain bikes, fat tire bikes allow the rider to explore just about any terrain. Packed, snowy trails make for great fat biking conditions. Winters like this one, with large storms spread apart has made this a great season. Here are some of our favorite shots from instagram to inspire you to try this on your next weekend outdoors! This is a year-round activity, but having the ability to ride on snowy trails and empty beaches are a unique benefit to the fat tires on these cool bikes!
PREPARING FOR A WINTER ADVENTURE ON FAT BIKES:
Here’s what you need to know if you’re ready to get out there.
- Don’t wear cotton. Dress as if you were going cross-country skiing with warm footwear and good gloves.
- Dress in layers and consider bringing a backpack for unpeeling layers if you get warm.
- Go when it’s cold. Ideally, with no fresh snow (unless the trails you’re going to bike on are groomed). Call ahead to make sure trail conditions are optimal.
