Your Preview to the 2026 Summer Arts Scene in the MidCoast
With its distinctive coastal light and secluded rocky shores, MidCoast Maine has inspired artists like few places can. The works of Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, and renowned contemporary artists have helped foster a vibrant art scene that continues to grow. Recently, new galleries have opened, and the art museums have added exciting new works and collections. Here’s a brief guide to the MidCoast Maine’s summer art scene.

Farnsworth Art Museum, in Rockland
The Farnsworth Art Museum – Rockland
In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, the Farnsworth presents a major exhibition, “Maine: A Force within American Art (1890–2026).” The exhibit highlights Maine’s contribution to shaping American art. Works by many of America’s most renowned artists will be on display, including N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe, Alex Katz, Marguerite Zorach, and Louis Nevelson.

Bowdoin College Museum of Art – Brunswick
One of the earliest collegiate art collections in the United States, the Bowdoin College Museum of Art came into being through James Bowdoin III’s 1811 bequest of more than two hundred paintings and drawings. The collection now includes more than 25,000 works of art and is the only in the state of Maine that speaks to human creativity across time periods, cultural traditions, and mediums. The Museum is free and open year-round to the public.

Center for Maine Contemporary Art – Rockland
The CMCA is Maine’s premier contemporary arts museum. It began in 1952 as a small group that showcased artwork in barns, and it gradually expanded until relocating to a stunning space designed by renowned architect Toshiko Mori. Today, the CMCA attracts between 35,000 and 50,000 visitors each year. The museum also maintains a strong community focus through its Art Labs and free programs for local kids.
Blue Raven Gallery – Rockland
One of Rockland’s newest galleries, Blue Raven, showcases contemporary works by outstanding painters, photographers, and sculptors. The gallery’s very cool Rooftop Perch, with water views, is the setting for sculpture displays and occasional live music events.

Sylvan Gallery – Wiscasset
Sylvan Gallery represents some of the finest contemporary artists in New England. Many of the artists working in oil, watercolor, or acrylic have been exhibiting for over 30 years.
Lemont Block Collective – Brunswick
Located in the Victorian-era Lemont Block Building on Maine Street from the 1860s, the Collective is a large creative team of painters, jewelers, photographers, and craftspeople who display work and also help operate it.
Gleason Fine Art – Boothbay

Located in a restored 19th-century farmhouse in the center of town, Gleason Fine Art is known for its roster of some of Maine’s most highly regarded contemporary artists and sculptors.

Carver Hill Gallery – Camden
Now in its twentieth year, Carver Hill Gallery continues to attract art lovers with its collection of contemporary Maine art. Located on Bay View Street, the gallery’s rear entrance is close to Camden Harbor.

Waterfall Arts – Belfast
What began as a small group of artists in the wooded area of Montville has grown into a lively arts center in Belfast. It offers arts classes, workshops, public-access studios, and exhibitions all year long.
Caldbeck Gallery – Rockland
For over 40 years, the Caldbeck has showcased outstanding contemporary paintings, sculpture, and photography. It is recognized and respected in the art worlds of Maine and New York for its exhibitions of these art forms.

Langlais Sculpture Preserve, in Cushing
Langlais Sculpture Preserve – Cushing
The Langlais Art Preserve is home to over a dozen large wooden sculptures created by Maine artist Bernard Langlais. The 90-acre site includes a seasonally open Barn Studio with a community art space, historical film, and Langlais’s preserved workshop.

River Arts – Damariscotta
This popular non-profit gallery hosts year-round exhibitions featuring hundreds of Maine artists. With over 300 artist members, volunteers, and an active board, River Arts offers a diverse and inspiring experience.
Pemaquid Art Gallery – Pemaquid Point, Bristol

Located within Lighthouse Park on Pemaquid Point, the panoramic ocean views seen from the Pemaquid Art Gallery almost rival the art work on display.
Kerr+Jones Fine Art & Craft – East Boothbay
This beautiful gallery in East Boothbay has an ever-changing collection of work by local and internationally known artists. There are also “uncommon goods,” including a collection of Moroccan rugs and textiles from Africa, Guatemala, and Peru.
Triangle Gallery – Rockland
One of the newer galleries in the MidCoast, Triangle Gallery shares a courtyard with Caldbeck Gallery. The work of many well-known Maine painters, sculptors, and craftspeople is displayed throughout the year.

The Parsonage – Searsport
A large carriage house in Searsport’s historic district overlooking Penobscot Bay is now a cutting-edge art gallery showcasing a diverse slate of contemporary artists. The Parsonage’s mission is to explore the connections between ecology, creativity, and spirit.

Wiscasset Bay Gallery – Wiscasset
Fine paintings from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries are showcased across two floors of open exhibition space in the historic 165-year-old Wawenock Building.
